How to work out if your brakes are on the way out without having to remove a wheel?

It’s amazing how much we take our car’s brakes for granted. We just assume that stamping on the brake pedal when someone walks out in front of you is going to bring the car to a halt with minimal fuss. And, with any luck, that will always happen, but knowing that your brakes are in fine fettle isn’t always straightforward without removing a wheel and having a good look at them.
